Gaming journalism that too often forgets the gaming I read gaming journalism because I want useful information about games: gameplay, story, mechanics, performance, design and whether a game is actually fun to play. Too often, Polygon's coverage seems more interested in viewing games through contemporary political and cultural debates than in answering those basic questions. Recent commentary surrounding Fire Emblem is another example of why I no longer consider Polygon a useful source for deciding what to play. Diversity in games doesn't bother me at all. I enjoy games and anime featuring all kinds of characters and relationships. What bothers me is when personal ideological expectations become a yardstick by which games and their characters are judged. Games don't need to represent every possible identity or relationship to be good games. A male character being attracted to women is no more inherently problematic than a female character being attracted to women. I want games journalism to help me understand whether a game is worth my time and money. Polygon increasingly doesn't do that for me.
