Eine wunderbare Erfahrung. Ich habe in diesen drei Monaten mit den besten Deutschlehrern viel gelernt. Das Personal am Institut war freundlich und der Standort war auch gut. Ich kann es nur empfehlen! Albertina

I attended the B1 German course from May 26 to June 6, 2025, during my educational leave from work. I joined the program in week one of the B1 level, at the very beginning. There were a few things I appreciated. We covered a solid amount of grammar. The teacher checked written work carefully and gave a review test in the second week, which offered helpful feedback. There was regular writing practice, short presentations that helped build confidence, and the occasional game that lightened the mood. However, other aspects of the course were poorly balanced. While the grammar topics matched our level, most other materials, including reading, speaking, and homework tasks, were far too advanced for B1. For example, one homework task was to watch the film “Das perfekte Geheimnis“ (B2-C1 level) with German subtitles and write a summary. I understood only about 40 percent of the vocabulary, which made the assignment very difficult. In class, we were also asked to watch “Greenwashing bei Shell, Mercedes und Co. (ZDF)“, a B2-C1 level investigative documentary, and then hold a debate based on it. About half of the group said they found the film very difficult to follow. The task was clearly far above our B1 level, and just like other materials such as the “Niveau C1” speaking worksheet, it was used without any adaptation. We also worked with texts like the attached analysis on greenwashing, which clearly exceeded B1 level in vocabulary and structure. Vocabulary work was unstructured. For each new text, the teacher would ask which words we did not understand and then enter all of them into Quizlet, often explaining them using equally complex or higher-level terms. We were expected to study the entire list at home for upcoming tests. There were no supporting exercises, no focus on high-frequency or level-relevant vocabulary, and no guidance on what to prioritize. This lack of preparation and filtering made the learning process inefficient and quickly became overwhelming. It felt more like decoding than acquiring useful language. Throughout the course, it often felt like the teacher lacked a clear understanding of what content and tasks are actually appropriate for B1 learners. Speaking practice was not well supported. Apart from occasional pronunciation tips, spoken errors were not corrected. Many students unknowingly reinforced mistakes. During group activities, the teacher was often busy with unrelated tasks instead of monitoring our work and providing feedback. One fluent speaker dominated discussions, while less confident students stayed silent. This imbalance limited practice for most of the group. Hochdeutsch was not consistently used in class, which created a confusing mix of styles. Maybe that is normal in immersive settings, but it felt unclear and inconsistent. Placement was also poorly handled. It seemed to focus only on grammar, without checking communication skills like speaking and listening. As a result, students with very different levels were grouped together, and the course felt unbalanced from the start. As someone with certified C1/C2 proficiency in other foreign languages, I have taken courses that were more structured, better paced, and better matched to student levels. This one felt below average by comparison. Not terrible, but not particularly effective either. Both the placement system and the teaching approach would benefit from review. With better level alignment and more attentive classroom management, the course could become much more useful and motivating. On the positive side, the staff were kind and welcoming. The activities team organized great outings, and the kitchen staff prepared excellent meals. Thanks to everyone involved outside the classroom, your effort was appreciated. 📎 Attached: proof of attendance and sample course materials
